What is Responsive Website Design?
Responsive web design also known as RWD has been around since late 2011 and is an approach used to build websites that provide optimal viewing experiences on all devices.

Responsive website design allows for easy to read content and navigation and a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling, all across a wide range of devices, from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones.

A responsive website automatically rearranges the page content and elements to fit the device it is being viewed on. Whilst responsive website design is more expensive due to its complexity and additional build time, it completely eliminates the need to duplicate a website for mobile and other devices.

To test a website is responsive if you view any website on your desktop Pc or Mac, then reduce the browser window by clicking and dragging a corner down and towards the middle or left hand side you will see a responsive websites layout remains fluid and all content and images reduce. It basically pushes all the content to the left whilst remaining readable.

Fixed layout non Responsive
On nonfixed layout website if you reduce the browser window by clicking and dragging a corner down and towards the middle of the screen, you will see after a set width your browser adds a horizontal scroll bar.

This is because the browser window has reduced to less than the fixed width and you would need to scroll left and right to view all the content.
On mobile devices they automatically reduce the whole screen size which results in small unreadable content.

Why the importance of Responsive Website Design now?

Google predicted in 2012 that mobile device internet use would exceed desktop traffic by 2014, and they were correct. Google has always said that it feels responsive websites provide the best user experience and has now started including a “mobile-friendly” notation next to websites in mobile search results that are indeed mobile-friendly. Bing has also stated it prefers a single responsive URL.

In mid-January 2015 Google started to test and send out Emails to Google webmaster account holders with the subject “Fix mobile usability issues found on your website. The email stated: “These pages will not be seen as mobile-friendly by Google Search, and will therefore be displayed and ranked appropriately for smartphone users.”

The email also provided a link to where users can test their website https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/

Way back on April 21st 2015, Google announced it would be expanding its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change affected mobile searches in all languages worldwide and had a significant impact on their search results.
