.UK domain name Launch
On June 10, 2014 .UK domain names became available as a second level domain.
The .uk is a shorter, snappier and smarter alternative to a .co.uk domain. It shows your visitors that you are located in the UK and as it's shorter it's easier to write and easier to remember than a .co.uk.
This new extension also brings us in line with other large country-code registries such as .fr for France and .de for Germany, joining the rest of the world.
The .uk is set to become the new standard for UK based websites so make sure you grab yours now.
.uk registration is perfect for anyone based in the UK who wants to expand their current domain portfolio and attract more customers. With shorter more memorable names and the ability to show in an instant your site is UK based, this new extension keeps web users and businesses ahead of the curve.
But rest assured, your other domains will continue to function as normal, and the .uk simply gives you another option for you to choose in the UK namespace.
What you need to know as a business owner
For the majority of users the equivalent .uk domain became automatically reserved when it launched on June 10, 2014. So if you have a unique .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .plc.uk or .ltd.uk the.uk equivalent will be reserved up until June 10, 2019 as long as your domain remains registered.
You can check whether you have the rights to the new .uk by using the rights lookup tool. If you decide not to register the new .uk equivalent domain before June 10, 2019 it will then become available for someone else to register, but your existing domain will of course still be yours as long as it remains registered to you.
